SAFER WITH A VIEW

I started this project almost one month ago on May 16th when I put out a call on Instagram asking for window photos – inside looking out from people’s homes. I received over 100 photos including 1 photo from each 50 states. My original intention was to crowdsource these images and design them into a coloring page that encourages everyone to stay home, as much as possible, during the COVID-19 crisis. Living in Los Angeles, I felt fortunate that my city took quick policies like “shelter in place” and enforced wearing facial coverings in public. Meanwhile in Iowa, my home state, I was getting word from family and friends in Des Moines that hardly any one was wearing masks and bars were full to the brim after Governor Kim Reynolds lightened safety restrictions. I’m disappointed in the lack of seriousness around COVID-19 – especially in predominately white communities like Des Moines, Iowa where there is an unawareness and disregard for how their actions can affect black and brown communities disproportionately.

Then George Floyd was senselessly killed in Minneapolis. Mr. Floyd was the tipping point closely following the tragic murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Nina Pop, and too many other lives tragically lost to systematic racism. The systems that are set in place to supposedly keep Americans safe have been exposed. Healthcare systems are not keeping Black people healthy – they are killing them. The police system is not keeping Black communities safe – they are destroying them. I would say the systems are failing but they were never set up to succeed for all. I encourage you to watch the documentary 13th for more information.

So here we are, one month from when I first started Safer with a View. I’m witnessing my country activated, awakened, and energized with protests everyday. Should you go to the bar with your friends? No thank you. Should you go protest and be heard? Yes please. Now is the time to use your voice if you have the privilege to protest. Remember to social distance when possible and always wear a mask. Here’s a thorough list of safety instructions regarding protesting during a pandemic. For those who cannot risk leaving the house for health reasons, visit Black Lives Matter’s website to learn how you can take action from home.

You might be thinking “Janelle, why does a coloring page mater at a time like this?”. It really doesn’t matter. What matters is that you take action now. And perhaps the Safer With a View coloring sheets can be a spark for that.
